Who Really Wants to be a Millionaire?
Mindfulness & Observation
Who really wants to be a millionaire? Honestly. Hands up! You might think that you do. It might seem like the magic bullet, the answer to all of your problems…but is it? Are you actually pinning all your woes on something that is so far out of reach for a reason?
Lots to ponder I know, but that’s what we’re going to do in this article. I want us to interrogate that and a whole bunch of other stuff about ourselves. Everything starts with us in the present moment after all. You can not embark upon a journey to a destination if you don’t know where you are!
Mindfulness as a practice in business (and in life) is on the rise. So many people teach it and espouse its virtues as a practice…and I’m one of them! A lot of that comes from my Aspergers. Since being diagnosed relatively late in life (27) I’ve come to see mindfulness and the practice of checking in with myself regularly as just par for the course.
I have to interrogate emotions, interactions and reactions as they come to me. I can’t deal with them on impulse in the way that most people can. As a result: mindfulness is just something I have adopted as a coping mechanism. It’s something that helps get me through life.
What do I mean when I talk about mindfulness? You can check out my more in-depth teachings on the matter in my books and free resources. Essentially, as it pertains to business in particular; it’s about being able to observe yourself in the present moment and make decisions from a neutral space. Neutrality is the best space for this, removing the egoic self from the equation.
A practice that I always encourage is checking in. There are various ways to do this. Breath work is very popular, as is meditation. You can follow my guided meditation on heart coherence to get a feel for it (that’s over on my free resources page as well). It doesn’t really matter what you use, so long as you find something that works for you.
You need to be able to do this throughout your day and implement it around whatever lifestyle you have. I promise you though; you will find that you move through your day with more grace, ease and flow.
With that in mind then – who really wants to be a millionaire?!
Have you found yourself thinking “if only I could win the lottery” or “if I could earn a million dollars/pounds/euros, then I could finally…”? It’s common to do that, but it’s not common for people to really follow it up with any analysis. Again: my Aspergers probably plays a big role in why this seems so obvious to me, but understanding why I would think that is so important!
The simple fact is that being a millionaire, in and of itself, is not a solution to anything. You could become one through any number of means, none of which actually make you a millionaire. What do I mean? Think about it; what would be the real attraction in achieving millionaire status? Not having to worry about money. That’s it in essence.
I speak about this all the time, and it is vital in achieving anything; you are not seeking the thing itself, you are seeking the emotional payoff that it will give you. Why do we strive to experience anything?! It’s not really because of the object or moment in itself. It’s the emotional payoff that we will experience internally and really its about building a body of experiences that we can look back on fondly.
If you grow your business to over seven-figures, you would rightfully feel a degree of pride and validation. The emotional payoff that comes with social status of that kind is palpable. So much so, in fact, that some people achieve it through nefarious and even criminal means. They think that the ends justify the means, but bringing it back to mindfulness: if they really interrogate themselves, they’d know deep down that they didn’t really earn it.
Integrity is the linchpin
You need to understand yourself, know yourself and know exactly where you want to be, before you embark upon your journey. If what you are seeking comes from a true desire, innate within you, that is not trying to meet someone else’s expectations; you will know how to act with integrity. Because the desire is truly yours, you will instinctively know how to go about getting it. Because it’s a part of you! You will be able to make decisions in the moment that are aligned with the outcome that you want.
I often get my clients/students/whoever will listen, to spend the time understanding and really feeling those feelings you most associate with your end goal. This is the thing about emotional payoffs: we already know what they feel like! The whole reason we seek success in a particular area, is because we know how we will feel when we obtain it. This being the case, we can imagine ourselves in that scenario and witness the feelings as they manifest themselves in our bodies.
I am not saying; “just close your eyes, pretend that you’re a millionaire and you will be one.” Not a bit of it. You still have to act and produce the results in the real world. The point of such a practice is to start understanding who you are as that person. If you are a millionaire, how do you act? What does an average day look like to you? How do you interact with your family, colleagues etc…?
As you may or may not know; I have built and lost more than one multi-million dollar fortune over my lifetime. In each case, the real reason for why I lost it was because I didn’t know how to be a millionaire!. Plain and simple. I was still being angry young man Daniel, with a chip on his shoulder and something to prove. I was living someone else’s life and as a result, it was unsustainable.
Being a millionaire isn’t really about what’s in the bank. That can come and go easily and sometimes without warning. It’s about living free of financial stress. Millionaires, true millionaires, don’t worry about where they’ll get the money to pay the bills. They don’t fret over where they’ll get their next meal, or how they’ll pay for their kids to go to college.
This state of financial ease informs their whole life and interactions with others as a result. Being free from the restrictive, stressful existence of scarcity enables them really start living!
All it takes is a million bucks in the bank right?
NO! This is what I really want to get to here: you don’t actually need to be a millionaire, in order to start living as one. It’s not about champaign lifestyles on larger budgets, it’s about finding a way to lift yourself out of financial scarcity. Do that first, find a way to financial freedom and the rest will take care of itself. The millions will come, purely because you are already living as a millionaire.
I don’t mean that money will magically fly in through the window at that point (though, let’s not rule anything out). It’s just that you will be open to opportunities that aren’t just about satiating your short-term necessities. You will be resourced to explore more and invest more, whether that’s your time or your money. You’ll be able to start investing in your development, your health and your wellbeing. In short: you will become a more resourced and valuable person, and that attracts wealth at an exponential rate.
That’s what a millionaire is really. So…do you want to be one now?
