“Man, what a life! He is living the dream. And here I am, staring at this silly screen, right at the cutting edge of mediocrity’, you think to yourself while you skim through someone’s glorified social media updates.
You long to be living someone else’s life and in the process of doing so, begin to demean your existence and self worth. It’s the most natural thing to feel this way but if your entire day is spent complaining about the grass being greener on the other side, then I have some news for you.
If the Grass is Greener on the Other Side, the Water Bill is Higher!
We’re often tricked into drawing comparisons between our lives with others, often by looking at the facades of happiness on social media platforms — whether it is luxury vacations, branded clothing, fancy cars or even the mushy updates of a romantic couple. What you fail to realize is that right behind the glamorous filtered photo, there is a messy-haired person uploading it, wearing torn pajamas, eating a regular bowl of cereal instead of a brunch meal at a Michelin star restaurant.
Your comparisons with others are only useful when they become aspirations instead of a directionless self loathing practice.
So how do you stop feeling that the grass is greener beyond that fence?
1. MAINTAINING THE CORRECT BALANCE OF FRIENDS
Life, in all its forms, demands a balance. If you diminish all your achievements and accomplishments because of the people around you, then you also need to balance it with some people who look up to you.
It’s great to be inspired by your circle, but if it leads to self-doubt alone, find at least one person who thinks you are doing wonders in your life. There will always be someone who thinks your grass is greener than theirs and trust me, it will offer the much needed ego boost in order to conquer your aspirations.
2. YOU NEED PATIENCE, NOW !
When you look at the success of others, you want all your dreams to come true this very moment. You can’t wait to showcase your achievements and want to be showered with all kinds of praises from the world. But you can’t have it all in one single day, unless you hit the jackpot.
Patience is a virtue, and each time you feel someone’s grass is greener, don’t lose sight of your goals and have faith in the process of time. There will come a day when others will be spellbound by your success story while casually obscuring your massive struggles.
3. DON’T IGNORE THE FAILURES
One of our biggest weaknesses as human beings, is we focus only on the destination but never on the journey. We fail to acknowledge the hardships, struggle and countless failures that eventually make a person successful. Whether it is in business, a job or even a personal relationship, it is always a work in progress and it is never a fairy tale saga that leads to an overnight success.
Focus on the journey before you get awestruck with the success.
Failure is not the opposite of Success, It’s part of Success
4. LIST YOUR MOMENTS OF GLORY
Each time you feel like you’ve achieved nothing or have nowhere to go, list your smallest of achievements on a small piece of paper. It does not always have to be something that changed the face of the earth, but the smallest acts of kindness that made someone smile are also worth an applause.
Whether you achieved your sales targets, helped a friend in need, took immense care of your elderly parents or simply helped a stranger cross the road once, it is worth writing because it shows you are a great person. Every breath you take has meaning and you have the ability to contribute in one or more ways to this world.
Comparisons that make you competitive in order to achieve and grow bigger are healthy, but don’t lose sight of your own desires amid all the running.
Your journey is Unique.
Take Pride in it!
